    Using these terms with patients

    • Match the adjective to the patient: "¿Es alérgico?" to a man, "¿Es alérgica?" to a woman. The same applies to "hospitalizado/a" and "embarazada".
    • Open-ended questions get short answers from patients unused to being asked. Follow "¿Qué le trae hoy?" with a concrete prompt: "¿Desde cuándo?"
    • Social history is sensitive. Prefacing with "Le voy a hacer unas preguntas de rutina" raises honest answers about alcohol and drug use noticeably.
